Sheath blight (SB), caused by Rhizoctonia solani, is a common rice disease worldwide. Currently, rice cultivars with robust resistance to R. solani are still lacking. To provide theoretic basis for molecular breeding of R. solani-resistant rice cultivars, the changes of transcriptome profiles in response to R. solani infection were compared between a moderate resistant cultivar (Yanhui-888, YH) and a susceptible cultivar (Jingang-30, JG).

Sixty BLSB affected maize samples were collected from three districts and pathogen was isolated and identified based on morphological, cultural and sclerotial characters using standard descriptions of IMI. Light microscopic studies revealed that all the isolates of R. solani f. sp. sasakiiare characteristically branched out at right angle in the distal end of the cell and showed a characteristic constriction at the point of branching.

In vitro study on the effect of four Trichoderma isolates on the mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani showed maximum inhibition of 74.54 per cent and least inhibition of 52.50 per cent. Effects of volatile compound produced by Trichoderma spp. against R. solani were ranged from 15.50 to 26.70 per cent.

Study carried out of this disease over a period of time revealed that Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn affects the yield severely whenever it occurs at any stage of the crop. In spite chemical measures like copper oxy chloride is recommended based on the previous studies on Rhizoctonia spp., the new fungicides need to be evaluated to find out the effective and economic fungitoxicants with which the disease can be controlled. Keeping in mind the seriousness of the disease, it was planned to elucidate the biocontrol and fungicidal capacity as soil and seed treatment against the pathogen, R.

To manage the disease an investigation at the Department of Plant Pathology, SHIATS-DU, Allahabad was carried out to evaluate the effect of bio-agents viz. Trichoderma viride @ 2%, Pseudomonas fluorescens @ 2%, T. harzianum @ 2%, botanical viz. neem leaf extract @ 5%, neem oil @ 5% and fungicide viz. carbendazim @ 0.2% against R. solani under invitro condition by dual culture and poisoned food technique. All the bioagents and botanical were evaluated singly. All the treatments significantly inhibited the mycelial growth of R. solani as compared to untreated check.

Variability in 20 isolates of Rhizoctonia solani Kühn [Teleomorph: Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk] causing sheath blight of rice and weeds, was observed by RAPD and ISSR DNA analysis in conjunction with morphology and pathogenicity studies. Studies on morphological characterization of R. solani isolates showed that isolates were highly variable in mycelial growth, color and sclerotial parameters.

Web blight of mungbean is one of the important diseases of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.). Morphological and pathogenic variability of 48 isolates of R. solani from 5 different districts of Uttar Pradesh were studied. Majority of the isolates produced pale brown mycelium with fluffy growth and were categorized into 3 groups on the basis of their growth rate including 11 fast growing, 25 moderately growing and 12 slow growing isolates of R. solani.

A survey was conducted during Kharif 2016-2017 to assess the incidence of sheath blight disease in nine districts of Telangana state. The per cent disease incidence (PDI) ranged from 20 to 80 per cent. Maximum PDI (80) was recorded at Miryalaguda block, while minimum (20) was observed at Buddipally, Rudrur, Vangapally and Wyra villages. The maximum severity (9scale) was observed at Huzurnagar and Miryalaguda blocks. The disease was observed from panicle initiation to grain hardening stage.

Management of crop diseases by biological control is an alternative and effective approach with minimum deleterious effect on environment and human health for ecosystem stability leading to improvement in crop yields. The present study was undertaken to characterize antagonistic rhizosphere bacteria against phytopathogenic fungi i.e., Neovossia indica and Rhizoctonia solani, which cause Karnal bunt and root rot disease, respectively. Twenty two rhizobacterial isolates out of total 88 isolates obtained from wheat rhizosphere, 25% isolates inhibited the growth of both R. solani and N.

Rhizoctonia solani Kühn [teleomorph :Thanatephorus cucumeris (Frank) Donk] is the most destructive and widely distributed soil borne pathogenic fungus causing black scurf of Potato. Cultural and morphological variability was studied in eleven potato isolates of R. solani collected from different potato growing areas including Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Maharashtra etc. Based on the radial colony growth rate, all the isolates were categorised into 3 groups as slow, medium and fast growing. Majority of isolates showed slow colony growth rate.

Silver nano particles were synthesized using two potential isolates of Trichoderma, Psudomonas fluorescens and one isolate of pathogen Rhizoctonia solani cell free culture filtrates incubated at different days 0, 5, 10 and 15. The present investigation revealed that bionano preparations irrespective of the isolate source used, i.e., Trichoderma, P. fluorescens or R. solani were found better in decreasing the sheath blight incidence in vitro though variation existed in terms of quantum of disease reduction.

Pathogenicity of R. solani on rice leaves was assessed following detached leaf technique. The herbicides viz., Glyphosate, 2,4-D Sodium salt, Butachlor, Pretilachlor, Oxadiargyl, Pyrazosulfuron ethyl, Bensulfuron methyl 0.6% + Pretilachlor 6%, Cyhalofop-butyl, Bispyribac sodium and Ethoxy sulfuron were tested at recommended concentrations by poisoned food technique were significantly superior over control in checking the mycelial growth of R. solani.
