Lecture Human anatomy and physiology - Chapter 6: Bones and skeletal tissues (part a). When you finish this chapter, you should: Describe the functional properties of the three types of cartilage tissue, locate the major cartilages of the adult skeleton, explain how cartilage grows, name the major regions of the skeleton and describe their relative functions, compare and contrast the four bone classes and provide examples of each class,...

A technique has been developed to search a proteome database for new members of a functional class of membrane protein. It takes advantage of the highly conserved secondary structure of functionally related membrane proteins. Such proteins typically have the same number of transmembrane domains located at similar relative positions in their polypeptide sequence. This gives rise to a characteristic pattern of peaks in their hydropathy profiles.

A series of relatively short (GCC)ntriplet repeats (n¼3–30) located within regulatory regions of many mammalian genes may be considered as puta-tive cis-acting transcriptional elements (GCC-elements). Fragile X-mental retardation syndrome is caused by an expansion of (GCC)ntriplet repeats within the 5¢-untranslated region of the human fragile X-mental retarda-tion 1 (FMR1) gene.

A site for silvicultural trials were selected at the same station trials ha of Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV) FSIV, located in Quang Tri Province. The site meets the criteria for a study of long-term sustainability, especially in terms of land use rights are managed by FSIV, and may be protected from changes in land use. It is relatively uniform and has been fenced to prevent browsing and impact from breeding.

Site of Infection The location of the infected site may play a major role in the choice and dose of antimicrobial drug. Patients with suspected meningitis should receive drugs that can cross the blood-CSF barrier; in addition, because of the relative paucity of phagocytes and opsonins at the site of infection, the agents should be bactericidal. Chloramphenicol, an older drug but occasionally useful in the treatment of meningitis, is bactericidal for common organisms causing meningitis (i.e.

Screening The rationale for colorectal cancer screening programs is that earlier detection of localized, superficial cancers in asymptomatic individuals will increase the surgical cure rate. Such screening programs are important for individuals having a family history of the disease in first-degree relatives. The relative risk for developing colorectal cancer increases to 1.75 in such individuals and may be even higher if the relative was afflicted before age 60.

Developmental Biology of Hematopoietic Stem Cells During development, blood cells are produced at different sites. Initially, the yolk sac provides oxygen-carrying red blood cells, and then several sites of intraembryonic blood cell production become involved. These intraembryonic sites engage in sequential order, moving from the genital ridge at a site where the aorta, gonadal tissue, and mesonephros are emerging to the fetal liver and then, in the second trimester, to the bone marrow and spleen.

The Genetic Map Given the size and complexity of the human genome, initial efforts aimed at developing genetic maps to provide orientation and to delimit where a gene of interest may be located. A genetic map describes the order of genes and defines the position of a gene relative to other loci on the same chromosome. It is constructed by assessing how frequently two markers are inherited together (i.e., linked) by association studies. Distances of the genetic map are expressed in recombination units, or centiMorgans (cM).

Rabbit characteristics: Two pairs of upper incisors; second pair small and peg-like, located just behind the front pair. Perforated lace-like texture of bone on side of skull in front of eye socket. (Both features not found in rodents). Long and pointed large ears. Arched upper profile of skull. Strong extension of spine where neck vertebrae meet thoracic vertebrae. Strong extension of middle tail vertebrae, raising tufted tail. Relatively thin, delicate bones. Rear-projecting "metacromion" from lower end of shoulder blade (for insertion of trapezius and omotransversarius muscles).
