SEMANTIC STRUCTURES OF CLAUSES WITH-VERBS OF EMOTION
IN ENGLISH AND VIETNAMESE
L.^ THJ PHU'ONG T H A O
(ThS; Dai hf c Ngo^i ngfr, DHQG Hii N$i)
Abstract: Processes of emotion, according to iijnctional linguists, are one of the mentil
or experiential processes. They are defined as the procceses denoting such mental reactions
to phenomena as like, dislike, hate, anger, surpirse, etc. The expressions that are likely to be
used to describe those subtypes of emotions are typically verbs, nouns, adjectives, even
idioms and proverbs. This article ains to classify verbs of emotion into different subtypa,
and then propose typical semantic structures of clauses with each subtype of those verbs in
both English and Vietnamsese.
Key words: mental processes; verbs of emotion; Experiencer; Phenomenon.
