  • Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species are tick-borne pathogens of both veterinary and public health importance. The current status of these pathogens, including emerging species such as Ehrlichia minasensis and Anaplasma platys, infecting cattle in Kenya, remain unclear, mainly because of limitation in the diagnostic techniques. Therefore, we investigated the Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species infecting dairy cattle in Nairobi, Kenya using molecular methods.

  • Hybrid genome assembly has emerged as an important technique in bacterial genomics, but cost and labor requirements limit large-scale application. We present Ultraplexing, a method to improve per-sample sequencing cost and hands-on time of Nanopore sequencing for hybrid assembly by at least 50% compared to molecular barcoding while maintaining high assembly quality.

  • Mosquitoes are one of the organisms subjected to frequent insecticide application due to their status as vectors that carry a wide range of life-threatening diseases. Turkey has climatic and other ecological features required for the breeding and living of 50 species from 8 genera. The members of the Culex pipiens complex are the dominant mosquitoes among them. In order to design more sustainable insecticide resistance management strategies, it is important to investigate the genetic structure of mosquito populations using molecular techniques.

  • Knowledge of a predator’s diet is important for understanding its ecology and for predicting its influence on the dynamics of prey populations. We investigated the spatial distribution and diet composition of the leopard (Panthera pardus) in the northeastern Himalayan region of Pakistan. We used molecular scatology technique to identify scats of common leopard collected from the field. The leopard was recorded at 30 different surveyed sites with an elevational range between 757–1891 m a.s.l. Its diet comprised 17 prey species, including both wild and domestic prey.

  • Polycarbazole/chitosan composite materials were synthesized electrochemically at various loadings of chitosan (Chi). Their electrochemical, structural, thermal, and morphological characterizations were investigated by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetry, and scanning electron microscopy. Further electrical conductivity was measured using a four-point probe technique.

  • Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for the treatment of pain and inflammation. Some undesirable effects are linked with NSAIDs such as the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) toxicity and cardiovascular disturbances. At present the preparation of a hybrid molecular technique is being used to produce new analgesic and antiinflammatory molecules. Attachment of NSAIDs with nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide releasing molecules produced some gastroprotective agents with improved analgesic and antiinflammatory activities.

  • A series of 5-substituted-1,3,4-thiadiazole-based fluoroquinolone derivatives were designed as potential antibacterial and anticancer agents using a molecular hybridization approach. The target compounds 16–25 were synthesized by reacting the corresponding N-(5-substituted-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)-2-chloroacetamides with ciprofloxacin or norfloxacin. The purity and identity of the synthesized compounds were determined by the use of chromatographic and spectral techniques (NMR, IR, MS, etc.) besides elemental analysis.
