The initial objective of this project was to improve Boards of Education in Indonesia, especially in terms of their selection, recruitment, performance and contribution to educational development. However, after doing preliminary study and field visits, I realized that the initial objective was far too ambitious. It quickly became evident that there was considerable confusion about District Boards of Education and a lack of basic information about how they should contribute to educational decision making.

Erythropoietin (Epo) is a hematopoietic cytokine that is crucial for the differentiation and proliferation of erythroid progenitor cells. Epo acts on its target cells by inducing homodimerization of the erythropoietin receptor (EpoR), thereby triggering intracellular signaling cascades. The EpoR encompasses eight tyrosine motifs on its cytoplasmic tail that have been shown to recruit a number of regulatory proteins.

Anti-Ras intracellular antibodies inhibit cell proliferation in vivo by sequestering the antigen and diverting it from its physiological location [Lener,M.,Horn, I.R.,Cardinale,A., Messina, S., Nielsen, U.B., Rybak, S.M., Hoogenboom, H.R., Cattaneo, A., Biocca, S. (2000)Eur. J. Biochem.267, 1196–1205]. Here we demonstrate that strongly aggregating single-chain antibody fragments (scFv), binding to Ras, induce apoptosis, and this effect is strictly related to the antibody-mediated aggregation of p21Ras.

Shiga toxin can be internalized by clathrin-dependent endocytosis in differ-ent cell lines, although it binds specifically to the glycosphingolipid Gb3. It has been demonstrated previously that the toxin can induce recruitment of the toxin–receptor complex to clathrin-coated pits, but whether this process is concentration-dependent or which part of the toxin molecule is involved in this process, have so far been unresolved issues.

Retinoid receptors are ligand-dependent transcription factors belonging to the nuclear receptor superfamily. Retinoic acid (RARa, b, c) and retinoid X (RXRa, b, c) receptors mediate the retinoid/rexinoid signal to the transcriptional machineries by interacting at the first level with coactivators or corepressors, which leads to the recruitment of enzymatically active noncovalent com-plexes at target gene promoters.

The translational factor eukaryotic initiation factor 4E (eIF4E) is a central component in the initiation and regula-tionof translation ineukaryotic cells.Through its interaction with the 5¢ cap structure of mRNA, eIF4E functions to recruit mRNAs to the ribosome. The accumulation of expressed sequence tag sequences has allowed the identifi-cation of three different eIF4E-familymembers inmammals termed eIF4E-1, eIF4E-2 (4EHP, 4E-LP) and eIF4E-3, which differ in their structural signatures, functional char-acteristics and expression patterns. ...

NEDD8 is a ubiquitin-like protein that controls vital bio-logical events through its conjugation to target proteins. Previously, we identifieda negative regulator oftheNEDD8 conjugation system, NEDD8 ultimate buster-1 (NUB1), that recruits NEDD8 and its conjugates to the proteasome for degradation. Recently, we performed yeast two-hybrid screening with NUB1 as bait and isolated a ubiquitin pre-cursor UbC1 that is composed ofnine tandem repeats of a ubiquitin unit through a-peptide bonds.

Cytosolic phospholipase A2 -a (cPLA2 -a) is a calcium-activated enzyme involved in agonist-induced arachidonic acid release. In endothelial cells, free arachidonic acid is predominantly converted into prostacyclin, a potent vaso-dilator and inhibitor of platelet activation. As the rate-lim-iting step in prostacyclin production is the generation of free arachidonic acid by cPLA2-a, this enzyme has become an attractive pharmacological target and the focus of many studies.

Palladin is an actin-associated protein that has been suggested to play crit-ical roles in establishing cell morphology and maintaining cytoskeletal organization in a wide variety of cell types. Palladin has been shown previ-ously to bind directly to three different actin-binding proteins vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), a-actinin and ezrin, suggesting that it functions as an organizing unit that recruits actin-regulatory proteins to specific subcellular sites.

Iba2 is a homolog of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1), a 17-kDa protein that binds and cross-links filamentous actin (F-actin) and localizes to membrane ruffles and phagocytic cups. Here, we present the crystal structure of human Iba2 and its homodimerization properties, F-actin cross-linking activity, cellular localization and recruitment upon bacterial invasion in comparison with Iba1.

A key molecular event in prion diseases is the conversion of the cellular conformation of the prion protein (PrP C ) to an altered disease-associated form, generally denoted as scrapie isoform (PrP Sc ). The molecular details of this conformational transition are not fully understood, but it has been suggested that an intermediate on the folding pathway of PrP C may be recruited to form PrP Sc .

Our Leadership IQ study of 20,000 new hires (reported in Fortune and Forbes) found that the number one reason why new hires fail is that they are not coachable. A high performance workplace is dependent upon employees that have the ability to accept and implement feedback from bosses, colleagues, customers and other key players. There is no point in investing time and energy in people who are not going to positively respond. Doing so is a time consuming and exhausting exercise in futility.

Interaction between acidic activation domains and the activator-binding domains of Swi1 and Snf5 of the yeast SWI⁄SNF chromatin remodeling complex has previously been characterized in vitro. Although deletion of both activator-binding domains leads to phenotypes that differ from the wild-type, their relative importance for SWI⁄SNF recruitment to target genes has not been investigated.

Antimicrobial peptides participate in innate host defense by directly elimi-nating pathogens as a result of their ability to damage the microbial mem-brane and by providing danger signals that will recruit innate immune cells to the site of infection. Dermaseptin DA4 (DRS-DA4), a new antimicrobial peptide of the dermaseptin superfamily, was identified based on its chemo-tactic properties, contrasting with the currently used microbicidal proper-ties assessment.

Hepatocyte growth factor activator (HGFA) is a serine protease initially identified as a potent activator of hepatocyte growth factor⁄scatter factor. Hepatocyte growth factor⁄scatter factor is known to be critically involved in tissue morphogenesis, regeneration, and tumor progression, via its recep-tor, MET. In vivo, HGFA also activates macrophage-stimulating protein, which has roles in macrophage recruitment and inflammatory processes, cellular survival and wound healing through its receptor, RON....
