  2. I. OBJECTIVES: A. Aims: - Students learn some words, phrases and basic structures used in a letter of gratitude. - Students learn how to write a letter of gratitude. B. Lexical items: - donation, donated amount, handicapped students, a receipt, cooperation, issue, get assistance, express one’s thanks for something, etc C. Structures: - I am happy to….,I would like to express….,etc D. Teaching aids: - board, chalks, poiter
  3. A. Aims: - Students learn some words, phrases and basic structures used in a letter of gratitude. - Students learn how to write a letter of gratitude.
  4. B. Lexical items donation, donated amount, handicapped students, a receipt, cooperation, issue, get assistance, express one’s thanks for something, etc
  5. C. Structures I am happy to….,I would like to express….,etc
  6. II.PROCEDURE: Warm-up: Teacher asks some questions: 1. Do you often write a letter to thank someone? 1. Yes, I do. / No, I don’t often write to thank someone , I just say “ thank you” 2. Will you help people if you have a lot of money? If yes, who will you help? 2. Yes, I will help the poor and the handicapped.

  8. Part 1 : Pre-Writing Task 1: 1. Teacher explains some words and phrases (use Vietnamese if necessary) - gratitude (n) : the feeling of expressing thanks to so - donation (n): the act of giving money , clothes or food to the poor or the handicapped - donor (n) : a person who makes a donation - handicapped (a)= disabled - receipt (n): receiving or being received; written acknowledgement of money or goods received - issue (v): publish ; put money into general use - cooperation (n): working together for a common purpose - get assistance = receive help

Part 1 : Pre-Writing (cont) 2/ Teacher asks students to do task 1 in pairs and call two students to answer it Answers:  the opening of the letter: Dear Sir/Madam,  the donated amount: I am very happy to receive a donation of $500 from your company some days ago.  the way (s) the money is used: the money will help us to repair the old building and build a new block of flats for the handicapped students  the way the receipt is issued: We will certainly issue a receipt as soon as possible  the gratitude to the donor: I would like to express our thanks for the donation from your company.  the closing of the letter: I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours faithfully
  10. Part 1 : Pre-Writing (cont) 3/ Teacher asks students to read the letter again to know the context of the letter, the writing style and some basic structures . Questions: a/ What is the main aim of the letter? (To express gratitude to the donation.) b/ Is it a formal or informal letter? Explain. (It’s a formal letter because of the phrases “ Dear Sir/Madam”, “Yours faithfully”, “would like to…”used in the letter
  11. Part 2 : While­writing  Task 2: 1. Teacher asks students to do the task in small groups (groups of five ) and find out the information about the suggestions in task 1 2. Teacher calls one student to write his/her letter on the board and correct it 3. Teacher offers a model letter

Part 2 : While­writing (cont) Model letter: (Address) Dear Sir/Madam, Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to express our thanks for a donation I am writing to of 1,000,000 VND I have just received from your organization. With that sum of money, we will contribute to the funding for our new school library. We will also spend some money on new computers. I hope you will help us a lot and cooperate with us in the future .  y ours, r e ly I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
