II. GRAMMAR: 1. Reported speech: Statements Ex1: “ I don’t like going out at night,” she says to me.  She tells me that she doesn’t like going out at night. Ex2: “ I am a student,” he said.  He said he was a student. Ex3: “They will come here tomorrow,” she said to me.  She told me that they would come there the next day.
Rules: 1. Reporting verb 2. Change tenses 3. Change pronouns 4. Change time and place
RULES: 1. Reporting verbs: say, tell ; said , told say to O -> tell O Ex1: He said, “ I am a student.” => He said (that) he was a student. => He told me (that) he was a student. Ex2: She says to me, “ I don’t like going out at night.” => She tells me that she doesn’t like going out at night. Ex3: “They will come here tomorrow,” she said to me. => She told me that they would come there the next day.
2. Change Tenses : Nếu động từ của mệnh đề tường thuật dùng ở thì hiện tại thì khi - đổi sang câu gián tiếp ta chỉ đổi ngôi; KHÔNG ĐỔI thì của động từ và trạng từ. Ex: “I am writing a letter now” Tom says. => Tom says that he is writing a letter now. - Nếu động từ của mệnh đề tường thuật dùng ở thì quá khứ thì khi chuyển sang câu gián tiếp ta đổi ngôi, thì của động từ, trạng từ chỉ thời gian và nơi chốn. Ex: “I am writing a letter now” Tom said. => Tom said that he was writing a letter then.

1. Ngôi thứ nhất: dựa vào chủ từ của mệnh đề tường thuật Ex1: He said: “I learned English.” => He said that he had learned English. Ex2: She said to me, “My mother gives me a present.” => She told me that her mother gave her a present.
2. Ngôi thứ hai: Xét ý nghĩa của câu và đổi cho phù hợp, thường đổi dựa vào túc từ của mệnh đề tường thuật Ex1: The teacher said to me, “You must do the exercise carefully.” => The teacher told me (that) I had to do the exercise carefully. Ex2: Mary said, “I have something to show you, Tom” => Mary told Tom (that) she had something to show him. 3. Ngôi thứ ba: giữ nguyên, không đổi Ex: “They will come here tomorrow,” she said to me. => She told me that they would come there the next day.
4. B. CONDITIONAL SENTENCE TYPE 1: Câu điều kiện loại 1: điều kiện có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai (in the future, tomorrow, next,…) If + S + V (hiện tại đơn) , S + will / can (not) + V0 am/is/are (not) V/Vs/Ves don’t / doesn’t + V0 E.g.: If I save enough money, I will buy a new car. = I will buy a new car if I save enough money,
Notes: a. Unless (trừ khi) = if … not (nếu không) Ex: Unless it rains, we will go swimming. = If it doesn’t rain, we will go swimming. b. The difference between if and when: If: we use If for things we are NOT SURE will happen When: we use When for things we are SURE will happen Ex: When winter comes, it will be cold. If I have free time tomorrow, I will visit you.

EXERCISE 2. Complete the following sentences with the correct tense of the verb in brackets 1. If you (be)______kind to me, I will be good to you. 2.  Mệnh lệnh + or + Clause → If you don’t + V0, Clause → If you aren’t + …, Clause EX1: Hurry up or you will be late. → If you don’t hurry up, you will be late. (=If you hurry up, you won’t be late.) EX2: Be careful or you will cut yourself. → If you aren’t careful, you will cut yourself. (= If you are careful, you won’t cut yourself.)  Mệnh lệnh + and + Clause → If you …, Clause EX3: Study hard and you will pass the exam. → If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
