Student___________ 3. meeting people with a similar outlook on life? Student___________ 4. missing having someone to help with decision-making? Student___________ 5. the advisability of going for the best accommodation you can afford? SOLO TRAVEL IN AUSTRALIA Student A: I remember sitting in the plane thinking to myself: ‘What have I let myself in for?’. The first few days were scary: I was all on my own on the other side of the world with nothing planned. But I soon met up with people to travel with. Of course, some you get on with, others you don’t. Some, for example, had every day planned out day in minute detail, when in practice things can change and it’s great to have the freedom to go with the flow. And that’s easy enough to do. You can take the Oz Experience bus down the west coast, jumping off whenever you want, then catching the 5-B
  6. next bus when you’re ready to move on again. Being away for a year, you do occasionally get lonely. To cheer myself up, I’d sit down and write a fortnightly email home about everything I’d been up to. Student B: Without doubt, you meet all sorts of people when travelling alone. I even made a friend on the plane out there. Some people are keener to make friends than others, of course, but if someone’s chosen to do the same type of trip as you, you’ve probably got lots of ideas in common. The advantages of a pre-planned tour are that you can get an agency to take care of all the arrangements, which can be time-consuming to do yourself – but it does mean that you’re tied to a predetermined itinerary, which wouldn’t suit everyone. There’s also the safety aspect in terms of the places you visit often being very remote. If you go off trekking in the wilds of a foreign country alone, it could be difficult to get help if things went wrong. Student C: Travelling solo creates opportunities to meet people. There’s no substitute for sharing the experiences of the day with a companion, and being alone forces you to seek someone out. I’d never have met so many people if I’d been travelling with friends. There’s also the wonderful freedom to do what you like, when you like, without having to convince anybody that it’s a good idea. However, there are downsides; meal times are something I’ve never really got to grips with in all the years I’ve travelled alone. But my advice would be to give solo travel a go – it can be very liberating. Maybe try a short trip to begin with, just in case it’s not for you. Another thing is stay in the nicest places your budget permits. Miserable hostels can really spoil a trip. And if you really are happy being anti-social, a pair of headphones can ensure the person in the next seat doesn’t bore you to death on the plane! Student D: Fun as it is, travelling solo also has its low points, including occasional loneliness and the pressure that you’re under to make your own mind up about everything. I chose to travel alone because I wanted to do something different, but I did miss people from home, and sometimes fell out with other travellers I’d teamed up with along the way. But I learnt to accept that some people have different attitudes to mine; that you have to put up with irritating people in hostels and accept not having as much privacy as you’re used to at home. The best thing for me about travelling alone was that it was a brilliant experience that enhanced my independence and helped me feel more self- assured. I knew I was on my own, which made me make more effort to speak to people and by doing so I made lots of great friends. Part 4. (1.05 points): Read the following passage and circle the best answer (A, B, C or D) to the questions according to the text. For a certain number of people who may be discovering esports for the first time, it can be seen as an unhealthy hobby, a waste of time – and certainly not an ‘acceptable’ career path for a child to follow. However, many now begin change their attitude towards the role of esports in education. Parents who are concerned about the risks of screen time must now be convinced that ‘training time’ in the gaming chair is justified. More than half of 13 to 18-year-olds in the UK believe gaming is a viable career path and want schools to add it to the curriculum and create their own extra- curricular esports competitions. With the quantity of gaming YouTubers and esports players on the rise, it’s not really a surprise that many children would see these roles within this booming media industry as their dream jobs. It is a fact that the highest earning gaming YouTubers can make over $50,000 per video and the top esports players can earn upwards of $500,000 a year. It is no wonder that schools today have to ensure that safeguarding measures are in place to keep young people safe online and anyone involved with esports will agree that there has to balance and moderation – no one is encouraging children to play online games for four or five hours every evening; it has to be part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. The key message from all those hosting esports in schools is that this competitive activity can grow STEM interests and develop valuable life skills. Nargish Khambatta, an esports expert, has witnessed how esports as a co-curricular activity for students with an interest in game-based technology has enabled them to assimilate and retain new skills and information. She explains: ‘Technical skills such as coding, designing and developing content using Unity and Unreal will equip our students for an industry that is growing exponentially. 6-B
  7. With the advent of the Metaverse, how we educate children and prepare teachers must also advance to meet these new opportunities.’ Tech knowhow is not the only benefits of having esports in school. Soft skills such as game journalism, time management, critical thinking, problem solving, team work, resilience, grit, etc. are also skills that develop organically together with playing esports. 1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. How Esports Turns School Life Upside Down? B. What Are Safeguarding Measures for Esports Players? C. Do People See Esports in Schools Differently? D. Is Esports Alternating Educators’ Attitude? 2. According to paragraph 2, over half of teenagers in the UK __________. A. spend too much time in gaming chair B. desire to learn esports as a subject in school C. take part in esports competitions in school D. want their parents allow them to be gamers 3. The word curriculum in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to __________. A. syllabus B. textbook C. schedule D. ceremony 4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. The number of gaming Youtubers and esports players is increasing. B. Many children dream of becoming online game programmers. C. Top esports players’ annual income can be up to one half million dollars. D. Esports can be considered an unhealthy hobby for some people 5. The word it in paragraph 4 refers to __________. A. encouraging children to play online games B. keeping young people safe online C. hosting esports in schools D. playing online games 6. The word assimilate in paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to __________. A. communicate B. accelerate C. require D. acquire 7. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. Schools are wondering about safeguarding measures to keep children safe online. B. Teachers has now been advanced enough to meet the new opportunities brought by esports. C. Having esports in school can help students’ soft skills grow gradually and naturally. D. Children should be encouraged to play online games for four or five hours each evening. Part 5. (1.2 points): This passage has eight paragraphs labelled A-I. Choose the most suitable headings for paragraphs B-I from the list of headings below by writing the appropriate numbers (i-xiii) in the corresponding spaces. Note: There are more headings than paragraphs, so you will not use all of them. Paragraph A has been done as an example. List of Headings i. Environmental change has always been with us vii. What is water? ii. The scarcity of water viii. How to solve flooding iii. Rivers and seas cause damage ix. Far-flung flooding iv. Should we be despondent? Or realistic? x. Humans’ relationship with water v. Disasters caused by the climate make us feel xi. The destructive force of water in former times better xii. Flooding in the future vi. Water, the provider of food xiii. A pessimistic view of the future Your answers: Paragraph A: ___vii_______ Paragraph B: ____________ Paragraph C: ____________ Paragraph D: ____________ Paragraph E: ____________ Paragraph F: ____________ Paragraph G: ____________ Paragraph H: ____________ Paragraph I: _____________ 7-B
  8. A. Water is the giver and, at the same time, the taker of life. It covers most of the surface of the planet we live on and features large in the development of the human race. On present predictions, it is an element that is set to assume even greater significance. B. Throughout history, water has had a huge impact on our lives. Humankind has always had a rather ambiguous relationship with water, on the one hand receiving enormous benefit from it, not just as a drinking source, but as a provider of food and a means whereby to travel and to trade. But forced to live close to water in order to survive and to develop, the relationship has not always been peaceful or beneficial. In fact, it has been quite the contrary. What has essentially been a necessity for survival has turned out in many instances to have a very destructive and life-threatening side. C. Through the ages, great floods alternated with long periods of drought have assaulted people and their environment, hampering their fragile fight for survival. The dramatic changes to the environment that are now a feature of our daily news are not exactly new: fields that were once lush and fertile are now barren; lakes and rivers that were once teeming with life are now long gone; savannah has been turned to desert. What perhaps is new is our naive wonder when faced with the forces of nature. D. Today, we are more aware of climatic changes around the world. Floods in far-flung places are instant news for the whole world. Perhaps these events make us feel better as we face the destruction of our own property by floods and other natural disasters. E. In 2002, many parts of Europe suffered severe flood damage running into billions of euros. Properties across the continent collapsed into the sea as waves pounded the coastline wreaking havoc with sea defences. But it was not just the seas. Rivers swollen by heavy rains and by the effects of deforestation carried large volumes of water that wrecked many communities. F. Building stronger and more sophisticated river defences against flooding is the expensive short- term answer. There are simpler ways. Planting trees in highland areas, not just in Europe but in places like the Himalayas, to protect people living in low-lying regions like the Ganges Delta, is a cheaper and more attractive solution. Progress is already being made in convincing countries that the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is causing considerable damage to the environment. But more effort is needed in this direction. G. And the future? If we are to believe the forecasts, it is predicted that two-thirds of the world population will be without fresh water by 2025. But for a growing number of regions of the world the future is already with us. While some areas are devastated by flooding, scarcity of water in many other places is causing conflict. The state of Texas in the United States of America is suffering a shortage of water with the Rio Grande failing to reach the Gulf of Mexico for the first time in 50 years in the spring of 2002, pitting region against region as they vie for water sources. With many parts of the globe running dry through drought and increased water consumption, there is now talk of water being the new oil. H. Other doom-laden estimates suggest that, while tropical areas will become drier and uninhabitable, coastal regions and some low-lying islands will in all probability be submerged by the sea as the polar ice caps melt. Popular exotic destinations now visited by countless tourists will become no-go areas. Today’s holiday hotspots of southern Europe and elsewhere will literally become hotspots – too hot to live in or visit. With the current erratic behaviour of the weather, it is difficult not to subscribe to such despair. I. Some might say that this despondency is ill-founded, but we have had ample proof that there is something not quite right with the climate. Many parts of the world have experienced devastating flooding. As the seasons revolve, the focus of the destruction moves from one continent to another. The impact on the environment is alarming and the cost to life depressing. It is a picture to which we will need to become accustomed. 8-B
  9. IV. WRITING (6.0 points) Part 1. (1.0 point): Read the following text and use your own words to summarize it in a paragraph of 60-70 words. You MUST NOT copy or re-write the original. In Asian culture, parents are highly controlling and demanding but affectively cold, requiring children to be responsive to parental demand. They consider child rearing as a form of child training that the parent should fully undertake as an obligation. They expect their children to obey family rules so they often teach their children to know that disobedience is punishable. In families of authoritarian parents, children are rarely praised. Consequently, the children of these parents seem not very confident or aggressive. They are expected to grow up to be collectivized. They have to respond to their parents needs, obey their parents’ demands and follow a generic path in life set for them. Western parents, on the other hand, are warm and involved. They appear to be flexible and responsive to the demands and behaviors of the child. These parents attach few restrictions, rules or limits to the conduct of their children. They respect the child’s viewpoints and opinions and emphasize the development of the child for an optimum psychological, academic and motivational functioning. As a result, the children of this type of parents become more independent and confident. They grow up in families where personality qualities are emphasized. They are encouraged to develop their own path of career. ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ Part 2.
