In this paper we study how power line communications are affected by different coding techniques. We investigate the case of LDPC coding scheme and its application to the PLC channel. The modulation method applied is BPSK while the transmission technique used is OFDM. We study regular LDPC codes, which is the worst case scenario concerning the performance of LDPC codes. The OFDM symbol size is initially defined at 4096 carriers, since certain characteristics of LDPC codes, like their sparse parity check matrix, imply that a larger block size improves their performance.

In this paper, we present results on the design of the channel code for High Altitude Platform (HAP) systems using Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) chart tool. We first consider a channel model from CAPANINA project and indicate the factors that affect HAP communication such as free space loss, atmosphere attenuations and small-scale fading.

The theoretical calculation result and simulation result of BER are compared to verify the validity of close-form of BER. Furthermore, the Bose - Chaudhuri - Hocquenghem code and the convolutional code are applied to multiple-hop MIMO relay systems and the BER of both channel codes is compared to find out the suitable channel code for medical application.

Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are forward error-correction codes, first proposed in the 1962 PhD thesis of Gallager at MIT. At the time, their incredible potential remained undiscovered due to the computational demands of simulation in an era when vacumm tubes were only just being replaced by the first transistors. They remained largely neglected for over 35 years. In the mean time the field of forward error correction was dominated by highly structured algebraic block and convolutional codes.

The properties of Convolutional codes. We introduced interleaving as a means to combat bursty errors by making the channel seem uncorrelated. We also studied “Concatenated codes” that simply consist of inner and outer codes. They can provide the required performance at a lower complexity.
