Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. Most people think that lions only come from Africa. This is understandable because in fact most lions do come from there but this has not always been the case. If we went back ten thousand years, we would find that there were lions roaming vast sections of the globe. However now, unfortunately only a very small section of the lion's former habitat remains. Asiatic lions are subspecies of African lions. It is almost a hundred thousand years since the Asiatic lions split off and developed as a subspecies. At one time the Asiatic lion was living as far west as Greece and they were found from there, but in a band that spreads east through various countries of the Middle East, all the way to India. In museums now, you can see Greek coins that have clear images of the Asiatic lion on them. Most of them are dated at around 500 B.C. However, Europe saw its last Asiatic lions roaming free two thousand years ago. Over the next nineteen hundred years the numbers of Asiatic lions in the other areas declined steadily, but it was only in the nineteenth century that they disappeared from everywhere but in India. The Gir Wildlife Sanctuary in India was established especially to protect the Asiatic lion. There are now around three hundred Asiatic lions in India and almost all of them are in this sanctuary. However, Trang 3/6 Mã đề thi 232
- despite living in a sanctuary, which makes them safe from hunters, they still face a number of problems that threaten their survival. One of these is the everpresent danger of disease. This is what killed more than a third of Africa’s Serengeti lions in 1994, and people are fearful that something similar could happen in the Gir Sanctuary and kill off many of the Asiatic lions there. India's lions are particular vulnerable because they have a limited gene pool. The reason for this is interesting is because all of them are descended from a few dozen lions that were saved by a prince who took a particular interest in them. He was very healthy, and he managed to protect them; otherwise they would probably have died out completely. When you see the Asiatic lion in India, what you sense is enormous vitality. They are very impressive animals and you would never guess that they have this vulnerability when you look at them. Câu 36: According to the passage, many people believe that lions come from _____. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, almost nothing was written about the contributions of women during the colonial period and the early history of the newly formed United Trang 4/6 Mã đề thi 232
- States. Lacking the right to vote and absent from the seats of power, women were not considered an important force in history. Anne Bradstreet wrote some significant poetry in the seventeenth century, Mercy Otis Warren produced the best contemporary history of the American Revolution, and Abigail Adams penned important letters showing she exercised great political influence over her husband, John, the second President of the United States. But little or no notice was taken of these contributions. During these centuries, women remained invisible in history books. Throughout the nineteenth century, this lack of visibility continued, despite the efforts of female authors writing about women. These writers, like most of their male counterparts, were amateur historians. Their writings were celebratory in nature, and they were uncritical in their selection and use of sources. During the nineteenth century, however, certain feminists showed a keen sense of history by keeping records of activities in which women were engaged. National, regional, and local women's organizations compiled accounts of their doings. Personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, and souvenirs were saved and stored. These sources from the core of the two greatest collections of women's history in the United States one at the Elizabeth and Arthur Schlesinger Library at Radcliffe College, and the other the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College. Such sources have provided valuable materials for later Generations of historians. Despite the gathering of more information about ordinary women during the nineteenth Century, most of the writing about women conformed to the "great women" theory of History, just as much of mainstream American history concentrated on "great men." To demonstrate that women were making significant contributions to American life, female authors singled out women leaders and wrote biographies, or else important women produced their autobiographies. Most of these leaders were involved in public life as reformers, activists working for women's right to vote, or authors, and were not representative at all of the great of ordinary woman. The lives of ordinary people continued, generally, to be untold in the American histories being published. Câu 44: In the last paragraph, the author mentions all of the following as possible roles of nineteenth century "great women" EXCEPT ________ A. politicians B. reformers C. authors D. activists for women's rights Câu 45: The word "they" in the 2nd paragraph refers to________ A. efforts B. counterparts C. sources D. authors Câu 46: In the first paragraph, Bradstreet, Warren, and Adams are mentioned to show that ________ A. only three women were able to get their writing published B. even the contributions of outstanding women were ignored C. a woman's status was changed by marriage D. poetry produced by women was more readily accepted than other writing by women Câu 47: The word "representative" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _________ A. distinctive B. satisfied C. typical D. supportive Câu 48: In the 2 paragraph, what weakness in nineteenthcentury histories does the author point out? nd A. The sources of the information they were based on were not necessarily accurate. B.They were printed on poorquality paper. C. They left out discussion of the influence of money on politics. D. They put too much emphasis on daily activities. Câu 49: What use was made of the nineteenthcentury women's history materials in the Schlesinger Library and the Sophia Smith Collection? A. They were combined and published in a multivolume encyclopedia. B. They provided valuable information for twentieth century historical researchers. C. They were shared among women's colleges throughout the United States. Trang 5/6 Mã đề thi 232
- D. They formed the basis of college courses in the nineteenth century. Câu 50: What does the passage mainly discuss? A. The keen sense of history shown by American women B. The "great women" approach to history used by American historians C. The place of American women in written histories D. The role of literature in early American histories HẾT Trang 6/6 Mã đề thi 232
