READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 38.
Globally, population has doubled since 1968 and grown by almost 40 percent since reaching 5
billion in 1987, an event that led to the first World Population Day. Growth will continue at least until
midcentury despite dramatic declines in the average number of children per woman, according to UN
population division.
Current estimates indicate that roughly 83 million people are being added to the world’s population
every year. Even assuming that fertility levels will continue to decline, the global population is
expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, according to the
medium-variant projection.
The UN Population Division collaborates closely with the agencies, funds, programmes and bodies of
the United Nations system in the implementation of the work programme on population and in the
follow-up to the International Conference on Population and Development. United Nations missions,
national Government offices, United Nations offices, researchers, media representatives and the public
regularly consult the Population Division regarding population estimates and projections, and
information and analyses on population and development issues.
At its thirty-eighth session, the Statistical Commission requested the United Nations Statistics
Division and other international agencies to increase their technical assistance to national statistical
offices in order to strengthen national capacity for the implementation of the 2010 World Programme
on Population and Housing Censuses. In addition, the Commission requested countries to begin
implementation of the revised Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses.
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) works with many partners, both within and outside the
United Nations system, including Governments, non-governmental organizations, civil society, faithbased organizations, religious leaders and others, to achieve its mission. To better respond to local
needs, UNFPA increasingly devotes resources to country-led efforts, placing emphasis on countryfocused and country-led implementation to achieve improved results, at the same time addressing
mutual accountability and strengthening harmonization and alignment.
UNFPA works to support family planning by: ensuring a steady, reliable supply of quality
contraceptives; strengthening national health systems; advocating for policies supportive of family
planning; and gathering data to support this work. UNFPA also provides global leadership in increasing
access to family planning, by convening partners – including governments – to develop evidence and
policies, and by offering programmatic, technical and financial assistance to developing countries.
The United Nations observes designated days, weeks, years, and decades, each with a theme, or
topic. By creating special observances, the United Nations promotes international awareness and
action on these issues. The majority of observances have been established by resolutions of the
United Nations General Assembly, although some have been designated by UN specialized agencies.
The United Nations also observes anniversaries of key events in its history.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 45.
There are four methods of managing waste: recycling, landfilling, composting, and incinerating.
Recycling is the process of turning waste into new materials. For example, used paper can be
turned into paperboard, which can be used to make book covers. Recycling can reduce pollution, save
materials, and lower energy use. Yet, some argue that recycling wastes energy. They believe that
collecting, processing, and converting waste uses more energy than it saves.
Landfilling is the oldest method of managing waste. In its simplest form, landfilling is when people
bury garbage in a hole. Landfills may pollute the local water supply. Not to mention that all of that
garbage stinks. Nobody wants to live next to a landfill. This makes it hard to find new locations for
landfills.
Compositing is when people pile up organic matter, such as food waste, and allow it to decompose.
The product of this decomposition is compost. Compost can be added to the soil to make the soil
richer and better for growing crops. While composting is easy to do on-site somewhere, like home or
school, it's hard to do after the garbage gets all mixed up. This is because plastic and other inorganic
materials must be removed from the compost pile or they will pollute the soil. There's a lot of plastic in
garbage, which makes it hard to compost on a large scale.
One thing that is easier to do is burning garbage. There are two main ways to incinerate waste. The
first is to create or harvest a fuel from the waste, such as methane gas, and burn the fuel. The second
is to burn the waste directly. The heat from the incineration process can boil water, which can power
steam generators. Unfortunately, burning garbage pollutes the air. Also, some critics worry that
incinerators destroy valuable resources that could be recycled.
Usually, the community in which you live manages waste. Once you put your garbage in that can,
what happens to it is beyond your control. But you can make choices while it is still in your
possession. You can choose to recycle, you can choose to compost, or you can choose to let someone
else deal with it. The choice is yours.
