Learning through practice

This study explores the challenges and potential solutions for improving English language proficiency among non-English major students at Hoa Binh University. Through an analysis of current teaching practices, learner attitudes, and institutional structures, the research identifies critical factors contributing to poor English outcomes. Key issues include limited classroom hours, inconsistent entry-level proficiency, overcrowded classes, and a lack of motivation or clear learning goals among students.

Assessment can be considered as a key component for the improvement of the quality of language teaching and learning process. This study aims to investigate how teachers practice formative assessments (FA) in English for occupational purposes (EOP) classes and how they perceive it in promotingstudents’ learning, as well as challenges they faced. Data were collected through survey questionaires with sixty-one teachers and interviews with five teachers selected randomly.

This study explores the use of teacher reflective practice, teacher networking and teacher collaboration, beyond formal ICT training, through blog-based professional development of English teachers in the Mumbai region of India.
