Globalization is the process that makes economies and societies from all around the world become more and more connected. This means that people, ideas, technology, money, services, and many other things are moving between countries and changing the way people think and act. Not everyone thinks the same way about globalization. Some people think it is good, some people think it is bad. Some believe that globalization helps rich people get richer and makes poor people poorer. These people say that globalization helps big companies like CocaCola and McDonald's destroy local businesses. The people who think globalization is a good thing argue that globalization helps poorer people to become richer. They also think that it doesn't damage local cultures. These people also believe globalization helps prevent conflicts like wars. This is because countries that have economic connections will try hard to maintain good relationships with each other so their economies aren't damaged. Despite whether you think globalization is good or bad, it effects the world in two important areas: jobs and culture. Globalization has had a very strong effect on employment and jobs throughout the world. For some workers, such as engineers, lawyers, and bankers, globalization has been a good development. These workers are able to successfully compete globally and have seen an increase in their salaries. But for those who work in factories or in the
- service industry (at hotels, shops and restaurants), it has not been good. These types of jobs have been exposed to increasing competition from workers from poorer countries. A worker from a poorer country will do the same job for less money. This decreases the salaries for that job, so people get paid less to do it. Cultures have also been effected by globalization. Foods such as Japanese noodles, Indian curry and French cheeses have spread around the world. We can also see an increase in the use of Chinese characters in tattoos. Some people get these tattoos without actually knowing what the characters mean. Another area effected by globalization is the film industry. Most people have seen American movies. But due to globalization, Korean, Indian and Japanese movies have become more popular worldwide. No one knows the future of globalization. Most experts agree that it will continue to grow and have an increasingly larger impact on people's lives in the future. Question 34: What is the main idea of this text? A. While it isn't agreed on whether globalism good or bad, there are some observable effects. B. The effects of globalization are all around us and effect every part of our lives. C. Globalization has caused a decrease in the number of people with these skills and education. Therefore, they have become more valuable and are able to demand higher salaries. D. Whales are the largest animals in the world, even larger than some species of dinosaurs. Ironically, whales are among the gentlest creatures we know. There are people who go through great lengths to help them. One such case occurred in 1988, when three young whales were trapped in the sea. It was close to winter and the sea had begun to freeze over. Whales are mammals that require oxygen from the air, so the frozen ice was a great danger as it prevented them from getting any air. All they had was a tiny hole in the ice for them to breathe through. Volunteers from all over soon turned up to help these creatures. They cut holes in the ice so as to provide more breathing holes for the whales. These holes would also serve as guides for the whales so that they could swim to warmer waters. This effort was a success although one whale drowned. Although the whale is very huge, it is not hindered at all by its size when it is in water. Whales have tails that end like flippers. With just a gentle flick, it can propel itself forward. The skin of a whale is so smooth that it does not create any friction that can slow the whale down. A whale's breathing hole is located on the top of its head, so it can breathe without having to completely push its head out of the water. It is also thus able to gulp its food down without breathing in any water. Whales are protected from the cold seawater by body fat that is called blubber. This is so effective that a whale can even get overheated in the cold temperatures of the sea.
- Whales live in the ocean but in terms of behavior, they are more similar to humans than fish. They live in family groups and they even travel in groups when they have to migrate from cooler to warmer waters. The young stay with their parents for as long as fifteen years. Whales are known not to desert the ill or injured members; instead, they cradle them. Moreover, female whales have very strong maternal instincts. Question 36: By using the word 'ironically' in the second sentence, the writer suggests ______. Wayne Gretzky, nicknamed “The Great One”, is perhaps one of the best hockey players to have ever played the sport. During his career, Gretzky broke many professional ice hockey records. He was the first player to get 200 points in a single season. By the time of his retirement, he had a career total of over 1400 points. Gretzky’s status as one of hockey’s legendary players is almost undisputed by sports experts and fans alike. Wayne Gretzky was born in 1961 and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, where he spent countless hours practicing and improving his skill in ice hockey. He started playing team hockey at six years old, though the rest of his team consisted of 10 year olds. For most of his early career, Gretzky played with and against older teams and his coaches often noted that this was acceptable because he was able to match or even exceed the other boys’ skill level. By the age of 13, Gretzky’s impressive skill was evident and he was a star player although the parents of his teammates resented his abilities and often booed him when he was on the ice. In 1979, he joined a professional hockey league and became part of a team called the Edmonton Oilers. As part of the Edmonton Oilers, Gretzky dominated the game of hockey. In his first two seasons, he was awarded several trophies and had broken several records for the number of points scored in a single game and in a season. In his third season, Gretzky broke a record that had stood for 35 years – he scored 50 goals in only 39 games and had over two hundred points by the end of the season, which was unheard of in professional hockey. Eventually, Wayne Gretzky, as the captain of the team, led the Oilers to win the NHL’s championship trophy, the Stanley Cup, four times. In 1988, Gretzky moved from Edmonton to Los Angeles, which proved to be very controversial with Canadian fans. Edmonton, a small Canadian city, was in sharp contrast to the glamor of a large American city like L.A. Some Canadians called Gretzky a traitor (a person who betrays someone or something). Others accused Gretzky of being greedy and selling his skills for money rather than having passion for the game of hockey. Gretzky appeared deeply hurt by these accusations and defended his move to Los Angeles in the newspapers and on television. Eventually, Canadians accepted Gretzky’s move to America where he played for a team called the Los Angeles Kings. His popularity renewed local interest in ice hockey and tickets to the games were suddenly sold out. Despite an impressive career with the LA Kings, the team was never able to win the Stanley Cup. By the end of the 1990s, Gretzky
- asked to be traded to another team. He moved to New York but the Stanley Cup eluded him again and in 1999, he retired from the game.
