C. READING (2.5/10)
I. Read the following passage then choose the best option to question.

The growth of cities, the construction of hundreds of new factories, and the spread of railroads
in the United States before 1850 had increased the need for better illumination. But the lighting in
American homes had improved very little over that of ancient times. Through the colonial period,
homes were lit with tallow candles or with a lamp of the kind used in ancient Rome- a dish of fish oil
or other animal or vegetable oil in which a twisted rag served as a wick. Some people used lard, but
they had to heat charcoal underneath to keep it soft and burnable. The sperm whale provided a superior
burning oil, but this was expensive. In 1830 a new substance called “camphene” was patented, and it
proved to be an remained expensive, had an unpleasant odor, and also was dangerously explosive.
Between 1830 and 1850 it seemed that the only hope for cheaper illumination in the United States was
the wider use of gas. In the 1840s American gas manufacturers adopted improved British techniques
for producing illuminating gas from coal. But the expense of piping gas to the consumer remained so
high that until mid- century gas lighting was feasible only in urban areas, and only for public buildings
for the wealthy. In 1854 a Canadian doctor, Abraham Gesner, patented a process for distilling a pitch
like mineral found in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia that produced illuminating gas and an oil that
he called “kerosene” (from “keros”, the Greek word for wax, and “ene” because it resembled
camphene). Kerosene, though cheaper than camphene, had an unpleasant odor, and Gesner never made
his fortune from it . But Gesner had aroused a new hope for making an illuminating oil from a product
coming out of North American mines.
46. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a reason why better lighting had become necessary
by the mind- nineteenth century?
2

A. development of railroads.
B. demand for better medical facilities
C. increases in the number of new factories.
D. growth of cities
47. The phrase “served as” is closest meaning to ……
A. differed from
B. functioned as
C. rested upon
D. reacted to
48. What can be inferred about the illuminating gas described in the paragraph?
A. It was first developed in the United States.
B. It was not allowed to be used in public buildings.
C. It was not widely available until mid- century.
D. It had an unpleasant smell.
49. The word “it” refers to ……
A. fortune
B. odor
C. camphene
D. kerosene
50. Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?
A. a description of events in chronological order
B. a comparison of two events
C. the statement of a theory and possible explanations
D. an analysis of scientific findings
II. Fill in each gap (from 51 to 60) with ONE word to complete the text.

Books are written to provide knowledge and good books enrich the mind. By putting (51)……
under the influence of superior mind, we develop (52)…… mental powers. Through good (53)…… we
learn that people are everywhere the (54)…… in all ages and in all countries. This (55)…… improves
our love (56)…… others and helps us to live in peace with them. We also (57)…… that the world was
made not for man alone but for every creature that, can feel hunger and thirst, warmth and cold.
Though (58)…… may be possible for us to travel round the world and (59)…… the things happening
today, it is not possible for us to see the things (60)…… happened in the past but good books enable us
to see not only into the most remote regions of the world today, but also into the world in which our
ancestors lived.
III. Read the text. Then answer questions from 61 to 65.

Clothes can tell a lot about a person. Some people like very colorful clothes because they want
everyone to look at them and they want to be the center of things. Other people like to wear nice
clothes, but their clothes are not colorful or fancy. They do not like people to look at them. Clothes
today are very different from the clothes of the 1800s. One difference is the way they look. For
example, in the 1800s all women wore dresses. The dresses all had long skirts. But today women do
not always wear dresses with long skirts. Sometimes they wear short skirts. Sometimes they wear
pants. Another difference between 1800s and today is the cloth. In the 1800s, clothes were made only
from natural kinds of cloth. They were made from cotton, wool, silk. But today, there are many kinds
of man-made cloth. A lot of clothes are now made from nylon, rayon, or polyester.
61. Why do some people like very colorful clothes?
62. Were the clothes of the 1800s the same as clothes today?
63. What do sometimes women wear today?
64. What were clothes made from in the 1800s?
65. What can we call cloth made of nylon or rayon?
IV. Decide if these statements (from 66 to 70) are True (T), False (F), or Not Given (NG).

The way we live today is significantly different from the way our forefathers lived fifty or sixty
years ago. Thanks to modern technology, today we have got just about every amenity we need to live a
comfortable life. Some people believe that modern technology has made our lives more complicated.
They are of the opinion that we should learn to do away with it. Is that possible? Let’s examine.
Modern technology might have made our lives more complicated, but one has got to admit that it has
improved our lives in several other ways. For example, cars and buses have made commuting easier.
Electricity has literally brightened our lives. Air conditioning has made summer months tolerable. Cell
phones and internet make it possible to stay connected wherever we are. Home appliances are a boon
for homemakers. Technology has also considerably improved our productivity.
3

On the flip side, technology has made our lives complicated too. There is no escaping from the alwayson connectivity. Before the advent of cell phones and internet, taking a break was a whole lot easier.
People just had to pack their bags and go to the place they like to unwind. Now that cell phone
terminals are available in virtually every part of the world, people can never escape from their work or
problems. Even when they are on a family vacation, few people can resist the temptation to check their
work email. This need to stay constantly connected has only made our lives more stressful. Modern
technology has also made us physically inactive and prone to develop several lifestyle diseases.
Does that mean that we should do without modern technology? Well, it is not as easy as it sounds.
Technology is addictive. It is not easy to live without the technological innovations we are used to
enjoying. Can anybody now think of a world where we don’t have access to electricity or telephone?
The truth is that we can’t.
After analyzing the situation it is felt that though modern technology has made our lives more
complicated, it is not something that we can do without. What we need to do is to use it responsibly.
66. Today we have every amenity we need to live comfortably.
67. Cell phones and internet make it impossible to stay connected when we are away from others.
68. Technology has also considerably helped the education.
69. Modern technology made us physically inactive and prone to develop several lifestyle diseases.
70. Using modern technology responsibly is not necessary.
